Monthly car rental in Singapore: what it costs and what is included
What a monthly rental costs next to owning a car in Singapore, what SwiftDrive's daily price includes, and when renting by the month makes sense.

Who rents by the month
Many people who rent a car for a month in Singapore are not without a car for good. They are between cars: a COE has run out, a new car is weeks from delivery, or the family car is in the workshop. Others have just arrived for a new job, have a baby on the way, or are driving a parent to hospital appointments for a season.
And some are testing a quieter question: do we need a car at all? A month or two of real use, school runs, weekend markets and the occasional drive to Johor, answers it better than a spreadsheet.
What owning costs before you turn the key
In Singapore the right to own a car is bought separately from the car. The Certificate of Entitlement (COE) lasts ten years, and its price is set by open bidding twice a month. In the second October 2026 exercise, Category A (smaller cars) closed at S$132,004 and Category B (larger or more powerful cars) at S$131,901, according to the published results.
Spread across its ten years, a S$132,004 COE works out at about S$1,100 a month, before the price of the car itself, its registration, insurance, road tax, servicing, parking and petrol. If you sell early, you recover only the unused part of the COE, and the car will have lost value faster than almost anything else you own.
Parking adds a steady line of its own. HDB season parking for a resident's first car is S$80 a month at a surface carpark and S$110 at a sheltered or multi-storey one, with higher rates for second cars and non-residents.
What a monthly rental takes off your plate
Renting moves the large, lumpy costs to the company that owns the car. You pay for the months you drive, and nothing ties you to the car once you hand it back.
- No COE, no car loan and no depreciation to carry.
- No road tax renewals, inspections or servicing to arrange: the car's upkeep stays with us.
- If the car breaks down, or is damaged through no fault of yours, we deliver a replacement.
- If the car you booked becomes unavailable, you get the same model or a free upgrade.
- You can extend or change the booking online as plans move.
What SwiftDrive's daily price includes
Every SwiftDrive price is all-in for the car itself. Delivery to your door and collection at the end are part of the daily rate, at any hour and on any day, with no delivery fee, no zones and no kilometre limit. Each car comes with chilled water, tissues, phone cables and an umbrella.
Longer rentals cost less per day. From seven days a car's weekly discount applies, and from 30 days its monthly discount; both are shown on every car's page and in the cost estimator, so you can compare a three-week booking with a full month before you choose.
A few things depend on how you drive, and they are always shown separately so the total reconciles:
- Protection: three tiers, chosen at checkout, which set how much of any damage you would pay (the excess).
- ERP charges and parking, passed on at cost.
- Fuel or charge: return the car at the level it arrived.
- Additional drivers, at S$10 per driver per day.
- Malaysia trips, at S$40 a day, for Peninsular Malaysia only.
- Peak days: Singapore public holidays, school holidays and long weekends carry a higher daily rate, and the quote shows which days are peak.
- A security deposit of S$500, charged rather than held on your card, and refunded within seven days after the trip, less any charges.
Renting or owning: a fair comparison
If you drive every day and intend to keep one car for most of a decade, owning can work out cheaper per month than renting the same car for the same decade. The arithmetic turns the other way when the need is measured in weeks or months, when you are unsure how long you will be in Singapore, or when you are bridging a gap between cars.
For a sense of the market, Fresh Cars, a Singapore rental company, puts typical monthly rental at S$1,200 to S$2,500 depending on the car (2026). When you compare quotes, compare like with like: whether delivery and collection are included, whether there is a kilometre cap, what the excess is, and whether the deposit is a hold or a charge and when it comes back.
Questions to ask any monthly rental
Whoever you rent from, these answers decide what the month really costs.
- Is delivery and collection included, and at what hours?
- Is there a daily or monthly kilometre limit?
- What is the excess on each protection option, and what is the deposit?
- Are ERP and parking passed on at cost, or with a mark-up?
- What happens if the car breaks down: a replacement, or a wait?
- Can you take the car to Malaysia, and what does that add?
- Can you extend online, and at the same monthly rate?
Parking a monthly rental at home
HDB season parking is sold by the calendar month, for one to twelve months at a time, against a vehicle number. If you will have the car for a month or more, check HDB's e-service for the rules that apply to a car not registered in your name before you book; for shorter stays, the Parking.sg app covers coupon carparks by the half hour.
In a condominium, register the car with the management office or guardhouse when it arrives. Many developments ask for the rental agreement as proof, and some limit how many nights a visitor's car may stay, so ask early.
